wildflowers

Yesterday we were graced with sun and heat and wind.  Enough to make a girl feel truly giddy.  Our forested area has hardwood trees which take a long time to leaf- but nevertheless, things are greening up, there's no denying it!

I spied some wildflowers near the house and grabbed my camera.  I know I promised a ramble, but think of this as a preview-I'll try to do a proper hike with the dogs, and boots and all of that, when it stops raining (it's bucketing down right now).

The wildflowers are usually small and delicate and easy to miss.  You have to get down low (mud on the knees of your jeans) to try and capture their beauty.

This is a Trout Lily.  I know because I looked it up.

These are white trout Lilies, which are apparently less common.  We have a great many of them, and so we must be special.

Here is a little patch of trilliums.  They are the official flower of Ontario, and so they cannot be picked.  They do look a little prim and official, don't they?

Here is more of a glamour shot of a trillium, hey even official flowers have to let loose sometimes.

At the heart of the patch is a grouping of dark red trilliums.  This patch is here year after year.

This flower is quite bold- I'm not sure but I think it's a bloodroot.  They're quite vibrant and really stand out on the forest floor.

I don't know what these delicate little fellas are called, but they're pretty.

I'll try to do a little more research on the wildflower names etc.... and failing that, I can always just make stuff up.  And until it stops raining, I guess I can just take a little breather.....

Er, I mean, do some spring cleaning!  :)

I was just at my sister's farm, and I think that they call the last flower, Spring Beauty. Of course that doesn't help out much. But they are lovely are they not.

Funny thing, I have never seen Bloodroot growing in the wild. Occasionally we see them in peoples gardens, but not in the forests. You are fortunate to have them growing naturally. I love them, especially the doubles, I used to try every spring to get a good photo of it. But it is difficult to do when they grow in a black pot.

Love the photos, and the post today. Glad to see more posts from you.

Love the flowers. The last fellows look a bit like wood anenomes - we get lots of them over here!

I just love that big wooden fork and spade you have in the last photo behind the fire. Can't you show and tell us more?

This wildflower post was fun. Ah the things we find when we look at life from different perspectives. I think I like the trout lillies, the trillium seemed to be a bit snobbish :) Where does "trout" come from anyway, they don't look fishy to me?

Maybe because the leaves are speckled?

Lovely photos, I especially enjoyed the Trillium..the red is a WOW! We only have white ones here! You are further along in your spring than we are!
I am with Lady Fi..and curious about the wall decorations! My eye was drawn to them immediately! :)

Ooh, love the implements in the last photo. And the wildflowers are just lovely. So glad to hear that spring is arriving just about everywhere.

Ah Spring... No pretty flowers in my neck of the woods yet. Thanks for posting your lovely photos so I can dream of what's ahead.

This reminds me of a photo book I had to edit during my first job. It was filled with pictures and descriptions of wildflowers. I have that book around here somewhere.

One question though. How do you keep your white sofa white? In one of your other photos I saw you had a white wingback chair. What's your secret?

No eating allowed in the family room ! Also, I wrap an off-white quilt around the seat cushions, and I wash that-the back cushions don't really get that dirty. The white wing chair doesn't get that much use-I guess people don't find it that comfortable!
